We know, we know, the iPhone isn’t exactly a new phone for 2009 per se, but with the increasing number of applications being added to this already impressive device, we’re including it anyways. Notable new applications include: Scrabble, virtual Darts, JobCompass, weDrink and literally hundreds more. If you’d rather spend your days snapping photos than chatting away aimlessly, consider Samsung’s latest, the Pixon. Fit for a true shutterbug, the Pixon boasts an eight-mexapixel camera, a 3.2-inch 240-by-400-pixel touch screen, face detection and geo-tagging. A multimedia phone in the truest sense of the word. Smile.

Targeted at the “advanced and connected” consumer, Palm’s latest, the Treo Pro, will replace the Palm Treo 800C come late January. Though the specs have yet-to-be-confirmed, key features are expected to include an internal antenna, 100 percent touch screen, Bluetooth compatibility, Sprint TV and a two-megapixel camera. 

If you’re opposed to the iPhone on principle or simply because you’re stuck on the Verizon network, consider the newest smartphone from Blackberry—the Storm. Featuring a touch screen with “click” technology (which allows you to actually click the screen like a mouse), a rich and solid display screen, speedier browser and exceptional sound quality and reception, this handsome phone has emerged as a formidable iPhone competitor.

Aside from its obvious sleek design (to be expected from Prada), the LG Prada II offers more than just good looks. The successor to the original brainchild of Prada and LG Electronics, the Prada II features some much-needed improvements. Noteworthy improvements include a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3G compatibility, a five-megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens and Wi-Fi accessibility. It’s the ultimate accessory.  

Coming from a company that has transformed the tech industry, we’d expect nothing less than a perfect mobile device. Though impressive as it is (with a very reasonable price and an ability to legally unlock after 90 days for use on another carrier), the Gphone is certainly not perfect. Drawbacks include a spotty T-mobile network, a design that fails to impress, and an Android OS that could use some tweaking. But while it’s still a work in progress, the first generation Gphone has enormous potential and is a fantastic smartphone option for T-mobile users.

There’s a reason why music industry insiders choose this phone as their mobile device of choice. The Nokia 5800 comes equipped with powerful speakers, lots of memory, and easy synchronization for excellent music play and Bluetooth, internet browsing, and touch screen to cover traditional phone capabilities. Even more, the Xpress features Nokia’s “Comes with Music” service, which provides 1-year unlimited access to the Nokia Music Store (at no additional cost). Get ready to rock n’ roll!

Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken, right? Well, not exactly. Known as the phone for email and messaging, the latest addition to the Blackberry Curve family managed to retain its reputation as the industry standard, while also offering several improvements. More than just some cosmetic touch-ups, the Curve is more compact than the Blackberry Bold, features higher dot pitch display, a redesigned trackball and GPS and Wi-Fi. Lack of the now famous 3G network might be a deal-breaker for some, but not for us. 

For commitment-phobes who are weary of binding contracts and agreements, the Shuttle, Virgin Mobile USA’s first 3G Ev-Do device, is a perfect fit. Featuring a 1.3-megapixel camera, a two-inch screen and a music player, this handset is available for purchase on Virgin’s Totally Unlimited plan, a pay-as-you-go mobile plan or a monthly add-on plan. It’s a quality phone without all the fluff. 

With a name that means “everything” in Latin and “wish” in Arabic, you’d expect a truly flawless device. And Samsung certainly delivers on their promise. The Omnia, powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional (which includes PowerPoint, Excel and Word), features a full touch screen (in addition to the infamous Samsung optical mouse), an impressive five-megapixel camera, and comes with every conceivable connectivity option (including WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, USB and more). It's no doubt Samsung’s best smartphone ever.
